I don't know about you, but spring is my favorite time of the year. To feel the warmth of the sun on your skin after a long, cold, gloomy winter (or even a sporadic day here and there in Charleston), knowing that more sunshine is in the future, is the BEST. Spring means rebirth: flowers start blooming, the grass is greener, and all those animals that migrated south, are making their way back to us. I don’t know about you, but that energizing feeling of spring is so amazing, I don’t want to only feel it outside, but inside my home, too. If you haven’t done a good, deep spring cleaning in a few years, then this is your year. In case the energy of the sun isn’t enough to convince you, I’ve made a list of 10 reasons why spring cleaning is actually really good for you!
Spring Cleaning increases productivity. After you have deep cleaned, you should know where everything is. When every item that you own has a “home” - you know exactly where to find it when you need it. Say good-bye to wasting time and energy looking for your things! Instead, spend that time focusing on things you want to do. It feels amazing!
Deep cleaning removing dust and allergens. If you are going to dedicate time to spring cleaning, take your cleaning to the next level by doing a quick dust/vacuum. Think about it: when was the last time your makeup drawer was completely empty? Probably the day you moved in. Since that drawer is completely empty, it will only take a couple of minutes (if that) to clean out the drawer. This little step makes a HUGE difference in how visually pleasing your space is, and it removes those pesky allergens that have piled up over the years - yuck!
Reduces Stress. If you’re like me, you get crazy stressed when you are looking for something and you can’t find it. Everything else seems to be so much more annoying and intense when I’m trying to figure out where something is. Removing clutter (remember… clutter = stress), and giving everything a home will reduce your stress by volumes.
Helps you focus. How can you focus on what you’re doing when there are piles of stuff distracting you? I don’t know about you, but I find it very difficult to focus on anything, when I see a pile of laundry that needs to be folded, dishes that need to be put away, etc. If everything in your home is in order, these piles will be your only clutter, which means it will only take 20 minutes to have a clean home so you can focus on something you’d like to focus on. Sounds pretty amazing, amirite?
Gets you moving. Spring cleaning doesn’t mean surface cleaning. It means sorting through all of your winter items, deciding what to keep and what to discard, cleaning your space, and putting everything back. Consider your spring cleaning your workout for the day. Not only will you feel relief from discarding those physical items, but you’ll get your heart rate going, too! Turn on your favorite jams and really enjoy yourself. This will be one of the most productive and rewarding days of the year!
You’ll find lost items. The first time I de-cluttered, I found hundreds of dollars in gift cards. I am not even kidding! How did I forget about these? Heres how: I was too distracted by the clutter that I forgot that I had hundreds of dollars just laying around. How crazy is that?!
Helps you make better choices. As I always say, when you have less clutter, you have less stress. This means more productivity, and a clearer mind. When you are in a productive and clear state of mind, you make better choices - it as simple as that! For me, this means making better choice with how I react to situations (ie: cranky kiddos) and with the food that I put into my body. Having a de-cluttered mind means that my brain has more space to focus on me and making decisions that I am happy with.
You’ll remove excess items. Anything that isn’t bringing value to your life, is unnecessary clutter. By removing these excess items (do you really need 20 pairs of flip-flops?), you’ll make space for the things that you actually use and love. This not only frees clutter (and stress), but makes your home feel cleaner, lighter, and is more visually pleasing.
Helps you connect with what you have. Have you ever bought something at the store just to get home and realize that you already have it? It could be anything from a jar of spaghetti sauce to file folders. When you don’t realize what you have, you certainly will not be able to find it when you need it. This causes stress, anxiety, and leads to you wasting time and money buying extra items that you don’t actually need.
HAPPIER! Can you believe something as simple as deep cleaning can improve your life this much!? How will you feel once you decrease your stress and increase your productivity? I’ll tell you how I feel: HAPPY! You deserve to be happy, and spring cleaning can certainly do that.
Are you going to deep clean this spring? What are you going to do with all of your new free time!?
